Learn more about these two popular dental restorations and whether they are right for you.
There are some dental restorations out there that really stand the test of time. Crowns and bridges are just two of those kinds of dental restorations. They’ve been around for years, helping countless patients of our Louisville, KY, dentist, Dr. Samantha Shaver, regain healthy, beautiful, and strong smiles again. Find out if your smile could benefit from what crowns and bridges have to offer.
As you might already know, a dental crown is specially crafted to fit over the visible portion of a tooth (the part above the gum line). It’s custom-made to provide the perfect fit and look and to resemble the real crown of a tooth. In most situations, a crown is placed to strengthen and protect a damaged tooth; however, crowns may also be used for cosmetic purposes as well. If you have a severely misshapen or malformed tooth you may choose to place a crown over it to not just protect it from wear and tear and damage but also to improve its appearance.
Of course, when crowns partner up with bridges they are able to help patients dealing with tooth loss regain a full smile. A bridge is designed to fill the gap left over by your missing tooth and to provide you with a realistic false tooth. No one will be able to tell that you have a false tooth because our Louisville general dentist works hard to ensure that all dental restorations are of the highest caliber and look and feel their best. In order to support the false teeth, we will need to place a dental crown over the teeth that sit on either side of the gap. From there, a false tooth is placed in the middle and cemented to the dental crowns.
Getting crowns and bridges can take two or three visits to our office in order to restore your smile. During your first visit, we will need to make sure that you are ideal for these restorations. From there, we will need to prep the tooth and shave it down so that the crown can fit over it. Impressions of your teeth will also need to be taken so that the dental lab that is making your new smile can provide you with a crown or bridge that offers a precise fit. Temporary crowns will be placed in the meantime. During your last and final visit, we will remove the temporary restoration and replace it with a permanent one.
